Disappointing news that the Ilala Ferry in Malawi has stopped operating its weekly service out of Monkey Bay. The operators say the service on southern section of the lake isn’t used enough so they have axed it. Combined with the slow train between Quamba and Nampula this was one of the last great romantic journeys in Africa. Anyway is still possible just means that the overcrowded minibus section that links the boat with the train gets longer and the opportunities for laid-back cruising is reduced. See here for more. (Apparently a private operator has stepped in with a boat to replace the axed service ????)

I haven’t found any recent reports of attacks on vehicles passing through the central province of Sofala so fingers crossed things are returning to normal on Mozambique’s main North South route. “No news is good news”, isn’t that what they say. All other routes continue to be unaffected
