“When Mozambique launched its ambitious state-financed film institute in the 1970s, the Cine Teatro Nina on Mozambique Island was a thriving venue for cinema.
More than 30 years later, the projectors have been replaced by the smell of hooks and bait and the old cinema has been turned into a warehouse for drying fish.” http://www.theafricareport.com/Music-Film/cinema-mozambiques-film-revival.html
But this is set to change yet again. Mozambique Island has just enjoyed a fabulous week of African films. Local resident Moira Forjaz brought the Maputo African Film Week to two unique locations on Ilha – Casa Girassol in Stonetown and Recinto Do Antigo Paiol in Makuti Town. And a third location, Centro Cultural Jembesse on the mainland just across the bridge.
The festival was a great success and funding has been secured for its return in 2015.
