This is sad news. After 9? 10? years Ruby’s on Ilha De Mozambique is closing its doors to Backpackers and other budget conscious travellers.
Everybody has a soft spot for this place. For years it was the centre of things, a hub where travellers met to gather information, guides congregated to sit on one beer all night long and sell beads, tours and whatever else. For locals and expats it was popular for an evening or late night drink, a sunset or a cinema event.
The first owners were Claudia & Uwe, a couple of fun loving dynamos that set the place up from scratch and injected the values that kept it on track for so long. Claudia gave Ruby’s its warm heart (complete with freshly baked nibbles) while Uwe built and fixed the place and offered words of wisdom on travel if he ever you could persuade him to stand still for long enough. It was the way they kept the original features and added their own kooky details that gave the place its charm.
In more recent years Joanna took over the reins, keeping Ruby’s at the centre of the islands accommodation mix.
Why is it closing? Apparently the owners (the same ones who employed Uwe to fix it in the first place) have been wavering on what to do, and stretching patience of Joanna and would be buyers by not giving a lease extension or any clear indication of what they want. Now they have decided that they want to sell it – and if the stories are true, at a price that ensures it will never be a budget accommodation again
For Budget travellers what next? Casa Luis is still there although a little bit off-radar recently. Mooxeliliya was always the alternative to Ruby’s but never tried for the backpacker feel, maybe now they will. Cafe Central is definitely in the running to take over, in fact in many ways they already have with budget rooms and communal spaces where guests and non-guests can mingle.
Ruby’s Nampula is owned by different people and presumably not affected
