Throughout August and September you can take the family on a whale watching tour that has been designed with kids in mind. Join us to watch the whales as they move around the islands of Cobras, Sete Paus and spend time swimming, exploring and relaxing on Goa Island.
Morning tours begin at 8:00 with a full briefing in our shop. This covers everything from whale behaviour, migration, conservation and an outline of the days planned route. We use maps, info-graphics and models to best explain this and kids get a bit of special attention with lots of time for questions.
With family trips we want to be sure everyone has a life jacket that fits properly, so we take a moment to try them on. We also want to customise the program to the age and interest of the kids, so we run through the options together
At 8:30 we set off, ideally under sail but if conditions require it we can use the motor instead. Usually we would head towards Goa Lighthouse which takes around 45 minutes.
Usually you will see whales breaching in the distance, leaping clear out of the water and crashing back down with a tremendous white splash. This is often in the first 30 minutes and makes a very exciting start. Under sail we can glide parallel with the islands. Our aim is to get an unforgettable encounter, and this is achieved by understanding whale behaviour and maneuvering into the best position, something we do without blocking their path or disturbing them in any way. As with all wildlife spotting, patience, respect and experience are whats required. Exactly how much time we devote to whale watching depends on how lucky we are and how everyone is feeling. Our aim is to be as flexible as possible
Usually we will make our island stop on Goa, it has the most beautiful beach where we can set up shade. If we saved enough time there’s a lighthouse that can be climbed
Around 12:00 its time to set off back to Ilha, arriving by 12:30

“Every whale watching day is different and no two whale encounters are ever the same”
The whales can always be seen close to Ilha at this time of year (if you know how to look), some days closer to the islands and at other times further out to sea. They migrate here from Antartica to give birth, it really is a very special place.
Abdul is in charge, he has years of whale watching experience. Plus he talks to the returning fishermen early in the morning to get the latest updates on where the whale pods are most likely to be. Add to this an uncanny ability to spot whales long before anyone else can and you have everything you need for whale watching success.
Trust in Abdul and the crew, be patient and you may be rewarded with an encounter you will remember for the rest of your life. Its not unusual for whales to breach up close, pass just meters beneath the boat or swim across to check us out. If there is a calf present we keep a bigger distant from the pod, but calves are inquisitive and may come to us. All of this is permitted, the key is to ensure that the whales are in charge of the encounter, they are free to come and go as they please.
We have a hydrophone – a very sophisticated/expensive submersible microphone. Lowered over the side it allows us to listen to the mezmerising sound of the humpback whales singing to each other
On the beach we set up shade and stay for as much time as we have left.
