Narrow streets and alleys of Stone Town

The Mozambique Island is 3km long and at its narrowest point only 500m wide. It is divided into two halves with many of the key sites located in the UNESCO listed Stone Town. Join your guide for an informative and lively walk through the streets and alleys that date back centuries. For the curious minded this is a must do activity. Your guide will explain the fascinating history as well as adding interesting anecdotes and commentary on everyday life.

You will begin with a visit to the Palace of Sao Paolo which serves as a museum displaying furniture, carpets, Chinese porcelain, paintings and other fascinating pieces from the colonial period. There is also a Maritime Museum in the basement with a replica wooden boat from Vasco da Gamma’s vessel.

Continuing on, your next stop will be the Fortaleza de Sao Sebastian. This enormous fort was built in 1558 and was strong enough to enable the Portuguese to repel both Dutch and British attacks. Within the walls of the fort is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, which is considered to be the oldest existing European building in the southern hemisphere. Cannons still line the battlements.

Next, wind your way through the narrow streets of the oldest part of town where you will visit the Swahili Door, Statue of Luis de Camões and the entrance to the Port Capitania with its enormous anchors and elaborate façade.

The Mozambique Island is 3km long and at its narrowest point only 500m wide making it perfect for exploring by bike. Saddle up and take to two wheels as you ride around the paved streets of Stone Town and venture briefly into densely populated Makuti Town in the company of a local UNESCO trained guide.

If you are inquisitive and want to immerse yourself in history and culture then this is the tour for you. Your guide will explain the fascinating history as well as adding interesting anecdotes and commentary on everyday life. Remember, your guide is from this island so there can be no better person to explore it with.

Criss-cross from side to side; wind your way through the narrow alleys of Stone Town and bustling streets of Makuti Town. On this tour you will get the opportunity to learn about and photograph every important site: Palace of Sao Paolo, Fortaleza de Sao Sebastian, Green Mosque, Oldest Mosque, Central Market, Fish Market, Hindu temple, the 2 statues, Swahili Door, Port Capitania and other attractions. Your UNESCO trained guide will provide historical information at each site and cultural insights as you journey into local life. Expect to see Tufo dancing or the days’ catch being landed.
